Fear of eating disorders

A charity devoted to supporting men with eating disorders is launching a nationwide campaign to raise more awareness.

Sam Thomas, the founder of Men Get Eating Disorders Too (MGEDT), became a national hero when he launched a website aimed at men.

The 25-year-old from Brighton developed an eating disorder when he was bullied at the age of 13.

After reading an agony aunt column in his mum’s magazine, he discovered he was suffering from bulimia, which was uncommon in men.

More than 15 per cent of young boys and men are suffering from an eating disorder in their early life, and many will hide the problem.

However, MGEDT aims to raise awareness of eating disorders in men, so they are able to get the support they need.

Currently, the website reaches an average of 800 – 1000 visits per month, but Sam is hoping to double this, through a nationwide campaign.

On Monday, posters and booklets will be distributed throughout schools, universities and doctors surgeries, to ease the secrecy associated with male eating disorders.

Mr Thomas hopes the campaign will help men to recognise their eating issues by seeking for help, as ‘eating disorders can ruin your life. Don’t suffer in silence.’

Scientists have developed a fruit drink that could prevent all clotting factors of the killer illness that causes deep vein thrombosis.

The syrup extracted from tomato pips, is the latest treatment for DVT. As well as cutting the risk of heart attacks and stroke, just like aspirin.

The new fruit-flavoured drink, Fruitflow, is the first to have been approved by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), as it improves blow flow and circulation. Unlike aspirin, the new tomato drink does not cause bleeding.

As researchers found that aspirin should not be taken unless you have a history of heart trouble, as it runs the risk of internal bleeding. Clinical trials have shown that Sirco fruit juice helps maintain a healthy blood circulation, by preventing the cluster of blood, which leads to clotting.

In Britain, more than 30,000 people are affected by DVT a year, while 10 per cent of all hospital beds, are caused by the illness.

However, Fruitflow is hoping to change this. As the effects of drinking the tomato juice, last just 18 hours in contrast to aspirin, which last up to ten days. The ingredient descends from the jelly extract found around the tomato seeds.

It was discovered by Professor Asim Duttaroy in 1999, when he worked as researcher at the Rowett Insitution of Nutrition in Aberdeen. Professor Duttaroy believes this drink is far safer than anti-inflammatory drugs that are sold behind the pharmacy counter.

“With lose dose aspirin, there can be side effects, but with the fruit drink there are none.”

His research shows that tomatoes contain an extract that can be dissolved in water, which helps to reduce the incidence of DVT.

David Keeling, an expert in DVT at the Oxford Haemophilia Centre and Thrombosis unit, believes it’s too sudden to judge how effective Sirco may be.

“It could be the safest alternative to aspirin, yet it could be a gimmick”.

Kim Zolciak and Kandi Burruss are two cast members from season three of Bravo‘s reality show which is being filmed as the pair tour the USA.

Zolciak and Burruss joined radio host Jojo on air this afternoon to talk about the new season, romance and their musical endeavors.

Meet & Greet

Around 30 Star 94.5 listeners won the opportunity to have lunch at the station with their favorite radio presenters and delve into to on and offscreen lives of the housewives.

With a plate of fried chicken, mac ‘n’ cheese and some greens the interogation began.

Kandi reveled that she would like to work with B.OB and Janelle Monáe in the future. She told the group that she was working on her next album, which would focus on being a working mother.

Kim was told about the benefits of giving up smoking by listener Betty but replied, “It’s hard and I’m not ready right now.”

She also told the listeners and camera about her new NFL boyfriend and the begings of her musical career in rap.

Kim and Kandi performed at a speical event organised by Star and Bravo at club “Rain” in Orlando.

The crowd went crazy for the former Xscape band member but appeared confused and embarrassed for Kim as she performed her track ‘Google Me’ which included her rapping.

The housewives left Orlando as rumors began, implying some tension between Kim and Kandi. No one will know untill season two premiers later this year.

Radio microphone

Local conservative talk show host Shannon Burke is on air for the first time since 2009.

He was released in May 2010 after serving six months for firing a gun. The bullet grazed his wife Catherine Burke’s head and then hit her dog.

According to WESH news, Burke claimed his wife had forgiven him and he that was drunk at the time of the incident.

He also stated that his time behind bars has given him time to think and sober up.

The first  “Shannon Burke Show” will air on Big 810 at 3pm today and listeners are eager to see if he brushes the whole incident aside and carries on as usual.

Fireworks at Lake Eola Park, 4th July 2010

The City of Orlando held it’s the largest and longest-running fireworks show at Lake Eola in Downtown Orlando for the 32^nd time.

The preparation around the lake, were made difficult by rain pockets but the building crew were undeterred. Lake Eola’s historical fountain was struck by lightning last year and had recently been reconstructed.

Things to do

According to WFTV over 150,000 Floridians join news teams and radio stations like Power 95.3 in central Florida for the celebration from day to night.

There were two stages of live entertainment, from bands to Cartoon Networks Ben 10. There were various food stalls and plenty of standing room around the lake before the fireworks began.

The park flooded quickly around 4pm as family’s grabbed spots for picnics near the waterfront and the adults moved towards the two beer-gardens.

The extra revenue was welcomed as local venders sold burgers, fries and cold drinks at a time when tourism is down.

The Big Red Bus (Orlando Blood Centers) and Blue Cross Blue Shield offered free health screenings, back massages and opportunities to give blood.

Across the States

As the USA celebrated the day they were liberated from the British and many remember the Declaration of Independence, thoughts are cast to those serving overseas.

According to WFTV, soldiers in Bagdad celebrated by running 10kilometers through the streets, playing American football and having barbecues on base. Many called home to speak with loved ones.

Back in Washington,  President Barack Obama held a lawn party and invited his family and friends, those who have served and the families of those who are still serving amongst others.

During the South Lawn barbeque, the president spoke about the importance of freedom:

“We celebrate the principles that are timeless, tenets first declared by men of property and wealth but which gave rise to what Lincoln called a new birth of freedom in America – civil rights and voting rights, workers’ rights and women’s rights, and the rights of every American.”

Throughout the USA, Americans stood united to remember that their freedom was not free and they are thankful.

Lack of money and too many credit cards

The final episode of  Oprah Winfrey’s ‘debt diet’ aired last night and the stories are pouring in of families who are taking control.

The plan to reduce the money you owe has been around for five years, (starting in 2006) but this year there has been a rise in participants dew to the economic downturn.

The show teamed up with three families in extreme debt and and on braking point and paired them with finalcal experts, David Bach, Jean Chatzky and Glinda Bridgforth.

Throughout the month of June, viewers saw success and failure as the families were given step by step instructions and implemented them in dad to day life.

How does it work

The aim was of the series, to empower the public by giving them the tools they needed to brake free.

Phase one includes, finding out how much debt you have, tracking your spending, learning the credit card game and refraining from spending more money than you have.

In phase two you create a spending plan, find ways to grow your income, improve your credit score and start saving.

It sound like a lot to take in but the small things like taking a packed lunch to work make all the difference.

Growing your money

My neighbor in Clermont, Florida offered to clean my pool weekly instead of me hiring from an external service.

Websites like , Yahoo and Mail.com have offered tips like buying second-hand cars instead of new ones and learning to cook at home instead of going out.

Students are taking the advice as well. Natalie Bastien, a BA Public Relations student in Orlando told me, “I’m going to watch my student loan and pay it back as quickly as possible.”

In regards to credit cards, “I don’t have that problem yet, when I spend on it I pay it back but i will never use it if i can’t pay back the whole amount in on go.”

The message has been well received. According the Global Post more people are working form home using websites like Fiverr.com and saving even more money. This may be that start of a new America, saving instead of spending.

As the case against Casey Anthony continues, one of her death penalty defence lawyers has quit.

Head lawyer Jose Baez spoke out stating, a motion had been filed on Wednesday afternoon at the Orange County Courthouse. It states, lawyer Andrea Lyon is leaving the case for financial reasons.

Chicago born Lyon was named as Anthony’s star lawyer and had she been on the defense team for over a year.

The experts

WFTV’s Legal Analyst Bill Sheaffer has said he is not surprised with the decision. With the lack of publicity surrounding the Lyon’s book, Sheaffer said it was only a matter of time and no significant loss.

Sheaffer believes that local lawyer J. Cheney Mason, a high profile Orlando defence lawyer can perform Lyon’s duties.

According to Baez, Mason has begun performing Lyon’s responsibilities including the filling of motions involving death penalty related arguments.

Money Matters

Lyon received a little more than $20,000 from Casey Anthony before the court declared her penniless.

But Sheaffer and others believe that Lyon was not a true believer in Anthony and that is why she quit.

Baez defended his former collogue claiming Lyon made financial sacrifices by paying for her own travel from Chicago to Orlando because she believed Anthony.

Lyon’s Future

There are no plans to replace Lyon but she will be focusing on a death penalty legal clinic that she runs.

Last year, Lyon appeared in the headlines when some controversial recordings surfaced prior to her joining Anthony’s defence team.

At one point, she referred to judges as “ugly,” alongside, verbally insulting female prosecutors and victim’s advocates, she called jurors “killers.”

The Case

Casey Anthony is accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter Caylee Marie Anthony in 2008, when she called the police claiming her daughter was missing.

The case became suspicious when the police found that Anthony had not reported her daughter missing until a month after she claimed to have seen her for the last time.

Anthony faces a first-degree murder charge but maintains her innocence along with family and friends but the toddler’s body was found outside the mothers home.

It was announced today after Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings sent a letter to the state attorney’s office.

According to WESH news, the letter stated, there was probable cause for the arrest.

The Sheriff asked that the formal charges be dropped against the teen who is now 15.

The young man, known as Edwin, had been accused of taking a toddler out of the Burlington Coat Factory in west Orange County earlier in June.

The teen said he was only trying to help the three-year-old find her mother.

Good News

All charges have been dropped despite, evidence stating the teen had been involved in three incidents of a sexual nature on school property.

Defense lawyer Natalie Jackson, represents the teen and has always maintained his innocence.

Miss Jackson was interviewed this afternoon by WESH and said the sheriff’s request meant more to Edwin as it arrived on Monday, which was his birthday.

Edwin has said, he wants to get back to normal.

Prosecutors use school records against teen accused of false imprisonment.

Today the prosecutors referred to 18 separate disciplinary incidents form the teenager’s two schools.

According to News 27 this afternoon, prosecutors said they had not made the decision to file charges against the 14-year-old African American boy, who is only being identified as Edwin.

The boy was not at the hearing in Orange County when the prosecutor, Terry Mills said that “Three of (the incidents were) of a sexual nature.”

The teen’s defense attorney Anita Shorter disputed the amount of sexual nature charges held within the school system.

What has happened?

The judge lifted a home confinement punishment that was ordered when the teen attended court for the first time.

Edwin was arrested on the June 10 at the Burlington Coat Factory on West Colonial Drive.

He is accused of trying to abduct a 3-year-old girl. The stores surveillance video shows the teen talking with the girl, walking her out of the store and returning with her hand in hand. He is met by her mother and store security.

The mother decided to press charges and Edwin was placed under house arrest. The teen and his lawyer continue to claim he is innocent.

The NAACP are closely monitoring the ongoing investigation.

Yet again, the government is holding BP and any other parties involved accountable for the continuing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Since the Deepwater Horizon oilrig collapsed, this is the third bill and totals around £34.8 million.

According to WESH, the White House

Protest in Pensacola county.

made a statement confirming that BP and other companies have already paid two amounts, totaling nearly £48.1 million.

The latest bill consists of specific national expenses, which includes those connected to the response of more than two-dozen national bodies and state agencies.

The British energy giant will continue to be charged for all associated costs from America’s biggest-ever environmental disaster, until the clean-up in completed.
